Why I’m running

I’ve been asked why I’ve decided to run for President, so here is the answer: Two years ago I was encouraged by many members to run for President and I decided to do so. I spoke with Mike Bandy the vice President at the time he too was running for President. We spoke about our goals for the local.  We had agreed on the goals so I told him I would not run, but did tell him that I’d hold him to the changes we’d agreed on. I’ve not seen any of these changes happen. I'm even more motivated and prepared to be President now.  I happily accepted the nomination for President

I value President Bandy's dedication to the local & I’ve told him that.

Specifically I’d like to see our local become more member centered.  Our union staff members are very valuable and have filled in a gap that our leaders have not. Now I think it's time to allow them to do their jobs, and have the leaders step up and do theirs.  For example as President I would write my own communications. I think it’s really important for the President to communicate as the leader of the local to the members and also as worker of OHSU. Not having this is concerning. This type of disconnect is not what we need. I’d also like to see the officer’s and board members work better as a team. Currently we’re quite top town & that’s not the best that our union can be.

I’ve worked on better member engagement, education, and empowerment and I’d like to further these goals as President.

 My vision:

I envision a union that embraces participatory democracy, by reaching out to all members to seek their input and strive to continue this culture throughout our union.  I will continue to prioritize education and increasing areas for member involvement. I will continue to help diversify the voices heard by union leadership, political leaders, and our elected officials, to include everyone’s point of view, no matter their race, age, sexual orientation, perceived class or social identity.  I will continue to explore new union organizing strategies so we can build the broader union movement together.  I would like to further our unions mentoring program, where more experienced union leaders lend knowledge and experience to newer members.
